Play Primary School POP Lacrosse

Teachers – if you would like to have a lacrosse programme at your school in 2010/11 read on . . .

Cobham Sports Association is the largest provider of amateur sport in the borough of Elmbridge, with some 1,500 players of different sports – Tennis, Lacrosse, Cricket & Rugby.  CSA is trying, with grant support from Sport England and Surrey County Council, to encourage more youngsters to play sport at all levels.

We have been running a programme to get more state school girls playing competitive team sports and our 2009/10 visiting US coach Lindsey McDonald has been coaching, some 200 state primary school girls at little or no cost to the school or girls.

This culminated in an eight team ‘pop’ (U12) lacrosse tournament on 7th March at Feltonfleet School.  This is primarily aimed at state primary schools (all new mostly players this year) that Lindsey had been coaching free-of-charge over the last two terms.

The match was run on a round-robin basis until about 1.00.  Schools which we have competing so far are: Feltonfleet, St Charles Borromeo (2), Hurst Park, Cobham (2) and Cleves.  The event was hosted at Feltonfleet School and was free to enter and free for spectators – medals and team T shirts were be provided for all competitors.

Lacrosse is a fun, fast, furious and cost-effective mass participation sport.  It is the world’s oldest, competitive team game and is simple to introduce as a mixed ‘community’ sport in schools and universities.  The elite game is the fastest and most taxing of all team sports and played internationally by over 30 countries.  At all levels, Lacrosse maximises hand-eye coordination and consistently enhances core muscle groups, team interaction and all elements of the cardio-vascular system.   Physiologically, psychologically and socially Lacrosse generates individual and community confidence.
